As our winter sports regular seasons come to a close in the next week, we’d like to remind you of our Pink Game Nights to raise awareness and funds for cancer support and our senior celebration nights this Wednesday and next Monday for Basketball players, track and field athletes, and Nordic skiers. There are also some NEW banners to raise!! See below for more details and we hope that you come out to support our students this week.

Speaking of banners & basketball and in honor of Black History Month, of note on this day in 1934 Hall of Fame Basketer Player and Boston Celtic legend, Bill Russell, became the first black person to coach an NBA (National Basketball Association) game. Bill Russel wasn’t just a great basketball player he had a long record and commitment as a civil rights leader and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ironically, also on this day in 1909 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was officially created. Formed by important black Americans, such as Ida B. Wells and W. E. B. Du Bois, the NAACP focuses on civil rights and social justice.

Curriculum Corner

Students in health class have been learning about the advertising efforts of large drug/nicotine companies to target them as lifelong customers. Students simultaneously learn about marketing strategies and other outside influences to manipulate brain impulse and decision making.

Schoolwide

Tuesday during flex our Mental Health Awareness club planned some fun events.  Students could head to the gym for a dance party or into the library for Valentine making or enter into the Spoons (card game) competition.  Fun was had by all and it was good to see student engagement beyond the traditional schedule.
